Advance Auto Parts Is Laying Off Hundreds of Employees
The biggest retailer of automotive parts and accessories in North America, Advance Auto Parts, Inc., has announced that the company is laying off hundreds of employees as part of its reorganization efforts.
The Roanoke, Virginia-based company is undergoing structural changes that are causing many jobs in field operations, supply chain, and corporate support to be shuffled or eliminated.
A company spokesperson has said that 475 positions will be affected, although the spokesperson did not clarify whether all of the 475 jobs will be eliminated. The spokesperson has confirmed, however, that no store-level positions will be cut.
The layoffs will primarily affect employees at the Advance Auto Parts corporate headquarters in Roanoke. It is unclear, however, exactly how many jobs will be eliminated there. The company had approximately 1,200 employees working at its headquarters in May.
The layoffs are also expected to hit the company’s Raleigh, North Carolina offices. Those offices were home to auto parts company General Parts Company, which was acquired by Advance Auto Parts in 2014.
In recent years, most of Advance Auto’s top executives have moved to the Raleigh offices. This includes CEO Tom Greco, who took charge of the company last year.
Advance Auto is a publicly traded company that emerged as the biggest automotive parts retailer in North America after completing the acquisition of General Parts. However, the company has been losing money in its recent fiscal quarters, so it had to bring in a new CEO and CFO last year to stabilize its business.
Back in 2015, Advance Auto Parts laid off 50 employees in Roanoke and 50 employees in Raleigh.
The latest round of layoffs is part of the company’s efforts to increase investments in its stores and improve customer service. At the same time, the company is investing in its online business to increase digital sales.
As of late, Advance Auto Parts has been employing a workforce of about 74,000 employees while operating the biggest store chain of auto parts in the country, with more than 5,000 stores.
