Gordy’s Market to Close Chippewa Commons Location
A half-century-old local grocery chain in Wisconsin, Gordy’s Market, is closing yet another store location as it continues its restructuring initiative. The family-run company, based in Chippewa Falls, announced that it is closing its store at the Chippewa Commons shopping mall. The company has not disclosed how many workers will lose their jobs due to the shutdown.
The Prairie View Road store, which is in one of the city’s shopping hubs, is being permanently shuttered. Following the closure, the Chippewa Commons shopping center will be left without a grocery store.
The store closures are part of the Gordy’s Market’s ongoing massive restructuring efforts, which include closing down underperforming locations and shifting focus to improving the profitability at the more promising locations.
The company has closed and sold a number of its locations in recent months. Prior to the Chippewa Falls location announcement, the company closed another store in the city of Hayward in July. The company also recently sold three of its stores to another Wisconsin-based grocery chain, Festival Foods. Included in that sale were two stores located in Eau Claire, and one store in Tomah.
The CEO of Gordy’s Market, Jeff Schafer, said in a statement, “Our plans for significant growth were just too aggressive. It’s time to get back to our roots and operate a smaller organization with the highest level of service to our communities. This announcement is a progression of that plan.”
Gordy’s Market has been a popular grocer in the Wisconsin counties of Chippewa and Eau Claire ever since the company first opened its doors in 1966. According to the company’s web site, Gordy’s Market currently has about 25 locations operating across Wisconsin, including those that are going to be closing down soon. The company also has
After this round of restructuring, there will be 21 Gordy’s Market grocery stores.
