Mass Layoffs Hit Deufol North America’s Sunman Factory
Industrial packaging company, Deufol North America, has announced that it is laying off 250 employees at its packaging factory in Sunman, Indiana.
In the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice filed with the state department, the company informs that the layoffs will take place by September 30. Deufol has not provided a reason for the layoffs.
The company has confirmed that, although the layoffs are permanent, Deufol is not closing its packaging factory in Sunman and will continue its operations there.
Deufol’s Sunman facility in Ripley County, Indiana, is the company’s largest packaging facility in the country, where it manufactures everything from industrial packaging to consumer goods packaging and plastic thermoforming.
The facility also delivers customized engineering solutions to Deufol’s clients, allowing companies to purchase machines and tools for fast and automated packaging.
In addition, Deufol also has industrial packaging plants in Charlotte, N.C., Pittsburgh, P.A., Cleveland, O.H., and Cincinnati, O.H.
Plants at three of these locations—Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Cincinnati—were acquired earlier this year when Deufol took over some of the assets of Bentley World-Packaging Ltd. The Wisconsin-based Bentley sold the industrial packaging plants to Deufol, which complemented the latter’s business and allowed Deufol to expand its footprint within the country.
The latest layoffs may be the result of the consolidation of Deufol’s industrial packaging business following the acquisition, as Deufol eliminates duplications in its production processes at the various locations.
Deufol’s industrial packaging business provides customized solutions to its clients for heavy-scale packaging, particularly for industrial cargo, including crating, storing, and safe handling of export goods.
The Sunman-based Deufol North America is a subsidiary of a German global packaging company, Deufol SE Group. The parent Deufol Group has operations spanning 11 countries across the world and employs a global workforce of about 2,700 employees.
