Fremont Plastic Products Closing Plant, Announces 185 Layoffs in Fremont, Ohio

Fremont Plastic Products Closing Plant

Fremont Plastic Products Inc filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) report with the Ohio Office of Workforce Development indicating that it would be permanently closing its facility in Fremont. The Fremont facility, located 70 miles west of Cleveland, has over 200,000 square feet of space with 23 machines.

Shuttering the plant will result in the loss of all 185 jobs there. The workers are represented by a union and may have bumping rights. Most of the employees, 126 of them, work as machine attendants; 13 of the employees work as process technicians. The rest work in a variety of other positions.

The company said it expects business at the plant to wind down on or around March 5, 2018.

Fremont Plastic Products is a subsidiary of The Plastics Group, Inc. The announced closure comes just two weeks after The Plastics Group was unable to secure loans or company savings capital investments.

Dennis Gerrard, the interim CEO, said the company had lost a number of major customers over the last few years and was engaged with its private equity sponsor to renegotiate its loan package. “Unfortunately those talks broke down. We have not been able to secure any other sources of finance and had no alternative to begin the wind down of the company,” he said.

Gerrard also noted that the company’s only other plant, in Willowbrook, Illinois, is also closing. The company’s Willowbrook headquarters is just 15 minutes southwest of downtown Chicago and has 60,000 square feet of warehouse space.

Founded in 1997, The Plastics Group designs and manufactures plastic blow-molded products for industrial and consumer clients. Its products include fuel systems, seating systems, structural systems, and air and fluid systems. Consumer products included portable fuel containers (gas cans, kerosene cans, etc.), oil change products, water containers, and gardening products.
