Gordon Food Service is closing its food distribution facility in York, Pennsylvania, a move that will result in the loss of 64 jobs, including administrative, distribution, and inside sales positions. The layoffs will start on March 23, with the facility closing by June 15. The remaining 70 employees will be transferred to a regional branch in York County.
The facility that is going to be closed down was acquired by Gordon Food Service in October, when the company bought out its competitor, York-based Ettline Foods Corp.
At the time, Joe Ayoub, president and CEO of Ettline Foods said optimistically, “We at Ettline are thrilled to become part of Gordon Food Service, a company that mirrors our commitment to delivering exceptional value, while remaining competitive in a constantly changing market. … We feel strongly that Gordon Food Service shares our values and will allow Ettline to continue to grow as part of its family.”
Meanwhile, Scott Nicholson, president of U.S. distribution at Gordon Food Service added, “We welcome the Ettline family of employees and look forward to working together in serving their customer base with expanded services and buying power.”
Apparently, Some families are different than others.
Layoffs are not entirely uncommon at Gordon Food Service. In August 2016, Gordon Food Service laid off all 120 employees at its distribution center in Pottsville, Pennsylvania after it was announced that the 148,000-square-foot facility was closing. That move was prompted by market conditions.
Just like with the closure of the distribution center in York, Gordon Food Service encouraged those who were being laid off to pursue opportunities at the company’s other locations.
Gordon Food Service is the largest privately held food service distributor in North America, with annual sales in excess of $12.0 billion. The Wyoming, Michigan-based company has 24 distribution centers, including 16 in the U.S. and eight in Canada.
