Onion River Sports owner Andrew Brewer has announced that he is planning on closing its doors for good after 18 years of ownership. The store, located in Montpelier, Vermont, is considered part of the community for having kept its doors open for nearly two decades.
Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. (OTCMKTS:BONT) said it will shutter its Younkers store at the Westwood Mall in Marquette, Michigan. Younkers, which is a subsidiary of Bon-Ton, has locations in the Midwest, mostly in shopping malls. hhgregg, Inc. (OTCMKTS:HGGGQ) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this past March, just days after saying it was closing 88 stores. The Indianapolis-based appliance and electronics retailer announced the hhgregg store closures in 2017 and eventual bankruptcy after reporting abysmal financial results for the holiday quarter, with overall sales cratering 24% year-over-year. Door to Door Organics, Inc. is no more, with the company having abruptly closed its doors on Friday. The company made the announcement on its web site, saying it had “ceased operations,” citing “recent events in our industry” as one of the reasons for the closure. Online Shopping May Be to Blame for Store Closure Richardson & Nash Clothiers, a men’s clothing shop, is the latest Suffolk closure, and yet another company in the growing list of retailers that have struggled to combat the growing threat from online shopping.
Keller’s Green Grocery in downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota has shuttered its doors after just one year in business. The urban grocery, once hailed as a key development for the downtown core, closed without fanfare on Friday, November 10. Sears Holdings Corp (NYSE:SHLD) announced that it will permanently shutter even more of its Sears and Kmart locations, two of its flagship subsidiaries. The early November announcement comes after a record number of traditional brick-and-mortar stores have closed in 2017. All Book World Stores Closing Across the Country A 40-year-old American bookstore chain is going out of business, leaving hundreds out of work. It’s difficult to say that the retail Armageddon is being overblown when you consider 2017 is the worst year on record for store closures. In the first half of 2017, more than 300 retailers filed for bankruptcy; a 31% increase year-over-year. Since the start of the year, U.S. retailers have shuttered 6,700 stores.
