Another WestRock Plant Closing, Laying Off Workers
One of America’s leading paper-packaging companies, WestRock Co, has announced that it is closing its manufacturing plant in Waxahachie, Texas in early September. Following the closure of the facility, the 145 workers employed there will be handed pink slips.
A company spokesperson has confirmed that all production activities, sales, and shipments from the Waxahachie plant will end by September 9. After the closure, the company will put the facility up for sale.
Not only does the closure hurt the individual workers, it hurts the Waxahachie economy, which will lose a significant employer and corporate taxpayer.
The manufacturing plant first opened its doors in 1987. Recently, WestRock has been using the factory to produce folded boxes for food and beverage packaging.
According to WestRock, the closure is a result of the company’s ongoing business consolidation. The company is getting rid of duplications in its production processes in order to achieve more efficiencies.
WestRock has been on an acquisition spree since the beginning of this year. The company recently acquired a number of other packaging companies and related assets. WestRock is now consolidating its operations in order to ensure that its older assets complement its new acquisitions.
As a result, the company is closing some plants and moving the work to other facilities. According to the company’s spokesperson, the laid-off employees have the opportunity to apply for jobs at the facilities where the work is being moved.
This is the second plant closure that WestRock has announced within a month’s time. Last month, WestRock closed a plant in Wheatley Heights, New York, which resulted in 152 layoffs. The reason behind that closure was also business consolidation, as WestRock moved its operations to another facility in New York .
WestRock Co is a publicly traded company that was founded in May 2015 from the merger of MeadWestvaco Corporation and RockTenn. The company has about 45,000 employees working at more than 300 locations in 30 countries across the globe.
