Conduent Closing Two Call Centers, Laying Off 187 Employees
Business process services company Conduent Inc, which was spun off from tech corporation Xerox Corp, has announced that it is closing two call centers and laying off almost 200 employees.
Conduent management has confirmed that two of the company’s call centers, located in Webster and Rochester, are being closed. Following the closures, 187 employees will be laid off.
A total of 128 employees will lose their jobs at the Webster location, while another 59 employees will receive pink slips at the Rochester call center. The closures and layoffs will be complete by September of this year.
Company spokesperson Sean Collins said in an e-mailed statement that the decision to shutter the two locations is part of the company’s “strategic transformation initiative” which was announced earlier this year.
As part of the strategy, Conduent had announced plans to move to a facility in Irondequoit. Collins said, “We continue with our plans to move our call center operations from Webster to lease space in the former Macy’s building at the Medley Centre (in Irondequoit).”
Conduent was spun off from Xerox in January of this year, as Xerox decided to shift its focus to its core business after experiencing a long sales slump. Consequently, the company decided to part ways with its call center business and hand it over to Conduent.
Xerox is also reported to be cutting jobs this year. The massive overhaul is part of the corporation’s efforts to narrow its focus to the core business of copying and printing.
Conduent has been losing money, and has had to take drastic action to find stable ground. Collins also said, “This decision will enable greater operational efficiencies and support our long-term growth and profitability plan. Conduent will continue to invest in Monroe County and have employees in the greater Rochester area.”
Conduent is reported to be employing roughly 600 employees in Rochester. In Webster, the company was occupying parts of the Xerox’s campus. As of Conduent’s latest quarterly earnings call in February, the company employs a total workforce of 91,000 employees.
